Over the past several years I have developed a great affinity for colonial style architecture. I'm not sure whether it stems from having grown up in the northeast, or if there is a deeper cause, perhaps due to my ancestral roots in the British Isles, or maybe it is simply the materials used and the rather utilitarian form that speaks to me. I am particularly drawn to row houses of this style, there is something so quaint and romantic about them. This weekend I will be traveling to Washington DC to visit my Aunt. While I am excited to explore the many markets and design shops she has mapped out for the visit, I am most looking forward to visiting historic Old Town Alexandria (pictured above). This little port town was built in the eighteenth century, and is a perfect illustration of the colonial style I like so much. I'll be sure to report back on my findings.
